MEDUSA is a passive and sustainable solution to toxic heavy metal pollution in freshwater ecosystems. Taking inspiration from nature, this design adsorbs heavy metal using submerged lignin.
Adept Adelaide's 2021 entry to the Biomimicry Global Design Challenge, MEDUSA is a biomimetic solution to heavy metal pollution in freshwater systems. This pollution is caused by runoff from the mining industry and is toxic to the surrounding ecosystems. MEDUSA was originally inspired by the Indian mustard plant's ability to accumulate heavy metals through their roots and the rorqual whale's baleen filter.
